Description
The Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) is a striking marine fish renowned for its distinctive appearance, featuring a long, slender body adorned with bold vertical stripes of black, white, and yellow. This species is characterized by its laterally compressed shape and elongated dorsal fin that resembles a trailing banner. Found in tropical Indo-Pacific waters, Moorish Idols inhabit coral reefs and lagoons, often swimming in pairs or small groups. Despite their beauty, they are challenging to keep in captivity due to specialized dietary needs and sensitivity to water conditions.
Care Requirements:
- Tank Size: Minimum 250 litres (66 gallons) for a single Moorish Idol, larger for multiple fish.
- Water Temperature: 24-27°C (75-81°F).
- Water Quality: Salinity of 1.020-1.025 specific gravity, pH 8.1-8.4, ammonia/nitrite levels should be zero.
- Tank Setup: Include plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots.
- Diet: Omnivorous; feed a varied diet including frozen marine foods (e.g., Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp), algae sheets, and supplemented with high-quality flake or pellet foods.
- Compatibility: Avoid aggressive tank mates; best kept with peaceful species in a mature, stable aquarium.
- Behaviour: Can be shy initially; provide ample swimming space and appropriate tank mates to reduce stress.
- Maintenance: Regular water changes (10-20% bi-weekly), monitor water parameters consistently.
- Health: Watch for signs of disease like ich (white spots), ensure quarantine of new additions to prevent infections.
